My sweet youngest boy Jack who is 11, wrote this note to me last night after his dinner..just wanted to share it with you all..He is such a delightful boy ...I'm very blessed to be his mother ...Its written on a heart post it note is was stuck to his empty dinner plate...it made me feel all warm and fuzzy..He is such a loving, caring boy.. ...

Hemming Jeans...............So they don't look like they've been hemmed !

Hemming Jeans-So they don't look like they've been hemmed !
 A few months back Kev bought himself some new jeans, well 5 pairs to be exact, well he bought 3 pairs and as they were such a good price, I said why don't you buy 2 more pairs which he did...and they look really good on him, they make his butt look sexy too...I know he gets my latest blog posts in his email, so I know if he reads them and see if he comments on his butt looking sexy in the jeans I have told him but not every any one else...well not until now...lol..
So that will teach me, I had 5 pairs of jeans to hem ...Kev is such a shortie.. nearly all his jeans need hemming...I'm such a lucky girl...lol..
I did a google on hemming jeans, I new the look I wanted but couldn't find anything ..the only ones I found were if they were only a little bit to long but as you can see in the above photo, they are way way to long so a little tuck wasn't going to be an option with these jeans ...I'm still chuffed with myself every time he wears them and having 5 pairs and its winter here in Oz..I'm chuffed most days, so that cheers me up ...
Tip number one always wash your jeans first as they will often shrink especially if 100% cotton...and these are... nothing worse then jeans half way up your leg, "slight exaggeration" but  not a good look...hehehe
The photo below is how I cut them before sewing ...
 first I got Kev to put them on so I could measure and pin where they needed to be cut...
remember the saying  "measure twice cut once" ... 
Then all you need to do is take out the middle piece and join the original hemmed bottom piece to the jeans...that sounds easy doesn't it ...and believe me it really is..so you put right sides together and join them as close to original stitching of the original hem...like in the photo below...
so you need to sew as close to the original edge as you can and you can neaten the edge with a zig zag stitch..I don't recommend using your over-locker for this job as the seams are way to thick and you will probably end up with a few broken sewing needles...take it from me ..that's what happened..so I'll be 
zig zaging them all in future..

This is how it will look can you see the sewing really close to the inner edge..and this pair I used the zig zag  the edge..no more broken sewing needles they cost to much to replace..

Here is the finished hem no need to iron just finger press them flat ..so how easy was that ..really really easy ...happy hemming every one ...

Acrostic Cushions ! Birthday Gifts I Made !

This is an acrostic cushion I made for a birthday gift for a sweet 12 year old girl ...
It all started when I started sewing lots of fabric scraps together and I made some lovely zipper cases with them and gave them for gifts too...So after doing that I had another great idea ...I'll join some other pieces of fabrics together and make cushions, then I decided to make them even more personal and add their name and turn it into an acrostic cushion...So I joined the fabric strips together in a log cabin and in the middle I embroidered their name ...I quilted it onto a piece of cotton batting  then I lined it..so that was the front completed ...Then I made the backing from some more of one of the fabrics on the front to match...
Here is the completed front before joining it to the back..
The finished cushion measures 16 inch square or 40.5 cm square...
To make the backing I cut two pieces of fabric 16 inches by 13 &1/2 inches  or metric 40 cm x 34.5 cm. Then I hemmed both of the longest sides, the two pieces for the back overlap each other so the cushion fits snugly inside...
Its a good idea to pin backing in place before sewing. 


 This is how the back looks when its completed. 
I also made the cushion inserts as well, by sewing together some bamboo batting and filling with pillow filling.. I have also made another one with the name Genevieve for Samantha's younger sister for her birthday but its not until next year ..So I have it packed away until then...Here are both of the completed cushions I think they are really sweet, I was very happy with how they turned out ...
I'd love to hear what you all think..Aren't they sweet ..thinking they will look lovely on the girls beds or maybe on a chair in their rooms..
A great way to use up all those gorgeous fabric scraps which are way to precious to waste...

My Paleo Protein Squares...Or Healthy Raw Nut & Seed Slice ! What ever you call it, its delicious !

I've been making this recipe for the last few months and its so quick , easy ,raw and super healthy..And great for my Paleo eating plan...
I call them my protein squares, but as I say no mater what you call them they are so delicious..Every time I make them they are slightly different as you can really use what ever ingredients you have on hand . You can also leave them chunkier in texture or more like fudge its really up to you it all depends how long you process them for...again either way they are just as delicious...I've done both ways..In my food processor I throw in the following ingredients...
Almonds.
sunflower seeds.
Pumpkin seeds.
sesame seeds.
coconut dried.
sultanas and or dates.
flax-seeds.
macadamia nuts.
vanilla bean.
 walnuts.
pinch celtic salt.
 raw cacao powder.
raw cacao nibs.
Honey or coconut nectar.
Extra virgin coconut oil.
tahini.
 I never measure I just throw in what I have..add dry ingredients first then add all the wet ingredients and process until well combined and  moist and a little sticky..then I put it in a lined 9 inch square cake tin and press it all to the edges and nice and flat then I put it into the freezer for about an hour to firm up them I cut it into 64 sqaures ..you don't need to add all the above ingredients.try different combinations of what ever you like..
     I've made some with and some with out the raw cacao powder..
but you will need enough wet ingredients like the coconut oil & tahini to bind it together...
I store it in a large zip lock bag in the freezer ...
when I made another batch yesterday I weighed it and it was 1 kilo and 147 grams ...
Note : I want to buy some hemp seeds and gojo berries to add to the mix...
options ..use cinnamon if you have no vanilla bean..you could also add other dried fruits eg apricots and apples..some of you will want exact measurements.. But once you make it once you can just taste it as you go...Its such a great snack to have between meals ...I find it very satisfying...Its way better then chocolate...After eating this I have no desire for chocolate...Its also very high in magnesium ..Just another reason so many people crave chocolate, because they are low in magnesium as cacao beans are high in magnesium..

Rhubarb Champagne !

Rhubarb Champagne !
Last week when Kev did the shopping he bought some rhubarb he really loves rhubarb and I'd had just recently came across a recipe for rhubarb champagne, so I thought what a great opportunity to make some ..So as you can see by the photo above I did just that..I did a google and there were lots of different recipes 
The one I used I changed it a little to suit myself ..as I usually do ...
3 &1/2 cups of chopped rhubarb (I had 3 sticks which was just perfect)
3 cups of white sugar. (original recipe was 3 & 1/2 cups)
5 litres of rain water.
1 whole lemon with skin on finely sliced.
2 cups of kombucha ( I had a bottle that I had let go to vinegar)
the original recipe was 3/4 a cup of apple cider vinegar.
 So I washed and finely diced the rhubarb and put it into a big stainless steel pot  with the sugar and water and sliced lemon and kombucha ..and stirred it to mix it all up well.
I covered the pot with a tea towel and secured it with an elastic band and left it for 48 hours the mixture needs to gather the natural yeasts in the air to start the fermentation process.(apparently you must not leave it any longer or the rhubarb will sour the drink and it will be ruined).
I did mine at 10 am on Monday and strained it at 10am Wednesday .I then bottled it up in some saved plastic cool drink bottles that I've had for quite a while that I got a friend to save for me that I use for my ginger beer...I then put the bottles in my pantry and when using plastic when they feel really firm to touch you know its ready ..It should be ready in about 3 days  - 2  weeks, depending on how fizzy you like your drinks and the weather.. Chill before serving.I was surprised how quick it took to be ready ..especially as its winter here in Oz..
The recipe said to discard the rhubarb either by giving to the chooks or in the compost I thought to myself what a waste..So I put it into a sauce pan added some peeled and chopped apples, some water  and cooked it up it was delicious ..Kev had his with ice cream I had it with some milk kefir, yummy..This amount makes 5 and a half litres..This would make a very refreshing drink in the warmer months..and looks really pretty pink in glasses it would be nice for parties etc...Kev loved it but I found it a little bit too sweet, but I was thinking you could top it up with either water or sparking mineral water..When I make it again I might use less sugar ..

My Pumpkin salad recipe !

Pumpkin Salad!
This is pretty much the same as my potato salad but using pumpkin instead and I sprinkle the top with pumpkin seeds..I also make it using sweet potatoes too...
I steam the cut up pumpkin, ...So while pumpkin is steaming away, I cut up a brown onion  finely diced then add to my large glass bowl that I put the juice of 1 lemon, a splash of extra virgin olive oil and one or two teaspoons of honey and a sprinkle of celtic salt and some dried mint then I add the cooked pumpkin and toss really well so all the dressing gets absorbed into the hot pumpkin..optional sprinkle with pumpkin seeds  and serve ..its so delicious ...Great for my paleo eating plan ...

Keep your pinking shears sharp !

A great way to keep your pinking shears sharp !
I have finally found a great way to keep my pinking shears sharp and at no cost, which is even better and it only takes a minute or two so I can have them sharpened any time I need to use them with out even leaving my sewing/craft room and a great way to recycle too...All you need is a small piece of aluminum foil, we call it Alfoil here in Australia. Now  fold your piece of foil to have at least 4 layers and cut through the layers with your pinking shears ..how quick, easy and simple it that ..keep cutting until when tested on a piece of fabric they are sharp and you're done...photo below is some foil wrappers from a tin of chocolates we bought Jack last Christmas and I decided to keep them in a shoe box in my sewing /craft room thinking they may come in handy for some thing..So that's what I use to keep my pinking shears sharpened now, I just get a few wrappers and cut through and then I'm ready to cut with them and recycling is an added bonus ...and free..so a win win in my book...
